The safety of your goods largely depends on the integrity of the container that you use for transportation. It is essential for you to inspect the container before the process of loading begins. Below are some of the important things you should pay attention to during the inspection.
Waterproof
You should make sure that the heavy goods container is watertight before you load your goods. To do this, enter the container and close all its doors. Observe all the floors and walls for any light that is streaming in. A waterproof container should be dark once you close all the doors. You should then have all leaks fixed in case you noticed some points where the light was getting into the closed container.
Moisture
You should also inspect the interior of the container to confirm that the container is dry. Your goods may corrode or suffer from moisture damage in case you load those goods into a shipping container that is not entirely dry. It is advisable to wipe off any moisture or condensation that is inside that shipping container before loading your cargo into it.
Protruding Objects
Shipping containers are subjected to different forces, such as the differences in acceleration while the container is being moved by road or rail. Those forces can cause serious damage to your cargo in case protruding objects, such as nails, were present at the time the container was packed. A thorough inspection should, therefore, be conducted to remove any protrusions that can affect the safety of the goods during transportation and handling.
Cargo Residues and Dirt
You should also make sure that the shipping container is free from any cargo residues and dirt before you start loading. Dirt and residues may contaminate what you wish to transport. Secondly, they can create a favourable environment for biological agents, such as bacteria to grow during the shipping process. Odours from these substances may also affect your goods. Ensure that the container is clean before loading so that you avoid these risks.
The internal checks above are not the only precautions that you need to take when you want to use a heavy transport container to move your goods. Other checks, such as exterior checks and post-loading checks are equally necessary. Work with the provider of the container so that you can do everything required to ensure that your cargo arrives at its destination without any defects that could have been avoided.
