Getting ready to ship your car across the country? If so, there are things you need to do to get your vehicle ready. Here are the top five preparation steps:
1. Note Damage
Before handing your car over to the freight transporter, clean it thoroughly and note any damage. Take pictures of the damage if possible. This protects the freight company in the event that you try to blame it for damage that existed prior to transport, but it also protects you. If the vehicle is damaged and the transporter company tries to argue that they did not cause the damage, you will have pictures that prove the condition of the vehicle prior to shipping.
2. Remove Personal Possessions
If you are paying to transport your car, it can be tempting to fill up the backseat with other things that you also wanted shipped to that destination. However, most freight transporters are in the industry of shipping cars, not shipping cars and possessions.
Avoid having any issues by emptying out your car before shipping it. In addition to not loading it with other goods, make sure that you take out things like aftermarket stereos, luggage racks or GPS systems that could get stolen while the vehicle is in transport.
3. Make an Extra Set of Keys
To transport your car, you will need to give your primary set of keys to the transporter. If that is your only set of keys, make sure that you get an extra set made. That way, if anything happens to the first set, you can still pick up your car without worrying about waiting for a new set of keys to be made.
4. Disable the Alarm
Before handing the vehicle over to the transporter, make sure that you turn off the alarm. The transporter's staff may need to be in and out of your car, and an activated alarm can make that difficult. Additionally, if your alarm is left on, it could drain the battery of the car.
5. Talk with the Transporter about Special Considerations
If your vehicle has been raised with a lift kit, if you have a spoiler, if you have a canopy on the back of your ute or if you have any other special conditions regarding your vehicle, talk with the transporter about that. They can advise you about lowering your vehicle, removing your spoiler, securing your canopy or taking care of any other considerations.
